Stop Force Feeding Pigs to be Publicly Slaughtered in Taiwan

Target: Leaders of the Taiwanese Government

Goal: End the cruel practice of force feeding pigs to be publicly slaughtered for the Pigs of God Festival, and use a more animal-friendly alternative during the ceremony.

The Pigs of Gods Festival, an annual contest that takes place in Taiwan, showcases a farmer’s ability to fatten up a prized pig to be ceremoniously slaughtered and paraded throughout the city streets.  Through blatantly cruel methods, up to 60 choice pigs are force fed “special feed and other treatments” with the hopes of becoming the heaviest at the attraction. In the days leading up to the event, the pigs are further abused be being forced to consume heavy metals (like lead) and sand to add as much additional weight as possible.

In the years leading up to the festival, apart from the grotesque feeding habits, pigs also succumb to other perverse forms of mistreatment including castration without anesthesia due to the belief that it aids in the fattening process.  As they become larger, they have trouble standing but continue to be fed.  The pigs’ organs begin to fail and they develop sores across their bodies from having to lie down for long periods of time.

Once at the festival, which marks the Chinese Lunar New Year, excessively large pigs are hoisted in front of a waiting crowd where they are ceremoniously slaughtered, painted, and paraded on floats in front of a Taoist temple.  In a markedly ironic twist, the Taiwanese government has made it illegal to either force-feed or slaughter animals inhumanely in public; however there is no official intervention for fear of the backlash that might come with trying to put a stop to a seemingly religious practice. And while it is considered a religious ceremony, it has been noted that the ceremony has only taken place for about the last 30 years.

For now, groups like the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Environment and Animal Protection Society of Taiwan (EAST) are promoting an animal friendly version of the ceremony which would involve using an alternative pig, instead: one made out of flowers, rice, or dough. Sign the petition to demand this brutal torture and slaughter of innocent animals is stopped.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Members of the Taiwanese Government,

Each year dozens of pigs are inhumanely fattened up in order to be the prize animal at the Pigs of God Festival. Once there, the animals are afforded further embarrassment and ill treatment by being publicly slaughtered, painted, and paraded in front of a large crowd of onlookers. Despite laws prohibiting this type of treatment of animals, this festival has been allowed to continue unabated.

In the efforts of preserving the rights of these animals, I urge you to look for alternative methods that are more animal friendly.

Groups like the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Environment and Animal Protection Society of Taiwan (EAST), are proposing some alternative methods of using pigs made from flowers, rice, or dough to exhibit at the Pigs of God of Festival. The goal is to not take away from the meaning of what the celebration/ceremony represents but to do so in a more responsible way that leaves no animal harmed.

In doing so, the community can still be involved with the festivities and no animal need be punished.

Sincerely,

So many cruel festivals are masked by the ‘religious’ indication. All of these cruel exhibitions at festivals must stop. Animals need the repect of humans, not the abuse.

This yearly ‘spectacle’ in Taiwan is condemned worldwide by civilised people. Only sick, sadistic and perverted minds enjoy animal slaughter. It is no good it being against the law if the laws are not enforced. These sadists make a mockery of the law and the government. Absolutely shameful.

  5. Unadulterated slaughter is not good for your culture.

  6. stop doing that!

  7. As horrendous as this is, it is no different to what 4H and other farmers do in this country and throughout the world.

  8. all religions are scams…just another excuse to kill, once again yet another tragedy from an asain country-We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form.
