British Committee on Climate Change releases report calling for 80% reduction in emissions

In a report released on Monday, the British Committee on Climate Change said Great Britain should commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2020 and by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

The report said these cuts could be achieved through more nuclear energy, phasing out dirty coal plants, and increased usage of clean sources like wind, solar, and tidal energy.  While these cuts will cost billions of dollars in the short-term, they are achievable “without sacrificing the benefit of economic growth and rising prosperity.”

The report notes that while developing countries must join in the effort, countries like Britain should lead the way.
