Target: Senate President, Vice President of the United States – Joe Biden
Goal: Extend tax incentives for clean energy into 2014
Several tax incentives for companies pursuing clean, renewable energy sources are set to expire on January 1, 2014. The clean energy sector is not only reducing pollution and decreasing the United States dependency on oil, but it is also increasing jobs all over the country. Big oil companies consistently receive subsidies and incentives from the government. We must ask Congress to prioritize the environment by renewing tax incentives for clean energy in 2014.
The Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit was implemented in 2009 as a portion of President Obama’s stimulus package. This incentive helped the United States double its renewable energy capacity from 2009-2012. These advancements will help us reduce carbon emissions and prevent the acceleration of climate change.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), clean energy is beneficial for the environment and the economy. Their website states, “an energy efficiency assessment study of the opportunities in the Southwest showed that wide spread adoption of cost-effective, commercially available energy efficiency measures in homes and businesses would reduce electricity consumption by 18 percent in 2010 and 33 percent in 2020 with a $9 billion investment. These energy savings would avoid $25 billion in annual electricity supply costs and $2.4 billion in annual natural gas costs (SWEEP, 2002).”
Clearly, the clean energy tax incentives are beneficial on many levels, not only environmentally, but also economically. We must urge Senate President Joe Biden to do everything in his power to see that these incentives are renewed in 2014.
Dear Senate President Joe Biden,
Several tax incentives for companies pursuing clean, renewable energy sources are set to expire on January 1, 2014. These incentives helped the United States double its renewable energy capacity from 2009-2012. It is imperative, for the environment and the economy, that these incentives are renewed in 2014.
Big oil companies consistently receive subsidies and incentives from the government. Not only is this type of energy disastrous for the environment, but it is also unsustainable. Clean energy is the solution that we have been waiting for. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “the global warming that has been observed in recent decades was caused by elevated levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, due primarily to human activities.”
Please use your power and influence as Senate President to encourage Congress to renew the clean energy tax incentives in 2014.
