With a lot to lose, Aspen seeks greenhouse gas reductions

Very few industries have a greater interest in fighting climate change than the ski business.  Therefore, it is not a surprise that ski towns, like Aspen CO, are leading efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

Since 2005, the city of Aspen has been working to reduce its emissions and has so far seen a reduction of 23.7% from 2004-05 levels.  Much of this reduction can be attributed to the two electric utilities that serve the area, which have increased the share of renewable energy in their electricity mix.

Aspen is also considering whether to adopt the 2030 Challenge which calls for dramatic changes in building practices including the requirements that:

All new buildings, developments and major renovations shall be designed to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 50% of the regional (or country) average for that building type.

At a minimum, an equal amount of existing building area shall be renovated annually to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 50% of the regional (or country) average for that building type.
