Crack Down on Puppy Mills

Target: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo

Goal: Enact a law which would protect dogs from puppy mills

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been presented with a bill that would allow local governments in New York to regulate pet dealers. This would allow individual communities to ban pet stores from sourcing their animals from out-of-state puppy mills. Puppy mills are filled with dogs who are neglected and abused as they live a life that is akin to slavery. Please encourage Governor Cuomo to act in the best interest of these animals and sign the Pet Dealer Bill into law.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), New York is the only state in the U.S. that “currently prohibits its towns and cities from regulating commercial pet breeders and pet stores.” This would not be an issue if the current state law had measures in place to adequately protect animals, but unfortunately it does not. In New York, it is perfectly legal to keep animals in small, wire-floored cages which can be stacked on top of one another.

It is also legal for New York pet stores to obtain dogs from out-of-state puppy mills. These poor animals have been bred in deplorable conditions and many of them are sick at the time that they are sold to unknowing consumers at pet stores. This is yet another reason why it is always best to adopt a loving pet, rather than risk inadvertently supporting puppy mills.

Pet stores and dealers are doing their best to encourage Governor Cuomo to veto the Pet Dealer bill, so we must encourage him to ignore their pleas and instead act in favor of the voiceless animals whose lives will benefit greatly from this bill becoming a law.

By signing this petition below, you will urge Governor Cuomo to take a stand against puppy mills by signing the Pet Dealer Bill into law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Cuomo,

I urge you to allow individual communities to regulate commercial pet breeders and pet stores by signing the Pet Dealer Bill into law. Not only would this law give communities the opportunity to demand better conditions for animals in pet stores, but it would also prevent dealers from obtaining animals from out-of-state puppy mills.

Animals in puppy mills have been bred in deplorable conditions and many of them are sick at the time that they are sold to unknowing consumers at pet stores. Puppy mills are also filled with dogs who are neglected and abused as they live a life that is akin to slavery.

Please take a stand against animal abuse and neglect and sign the Pet Dealer Bill into law immediately.

Sincerely,
