Obama’s vision of a stimulus package begins to take shape
Articles — By forcechange on November 25, 2008 10:47 amHaving looked at Google.org’s suggestions for a stimulus package, we will now look at the indications actually coming out of the Obama team. With close Obama ally, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois noting that as much as $700 billion may be warranted for the package, the shape of this bill is going to be enormously important.
As more information comes out, it appears that much of the package will be directed at creating jobs through infrastructure projects that are “shovel ready” (i.e., can be quickly started).
Obama economic advisor Laura Tyson has noted that investment could be directed towards highway projects and alternative energy initiatives, among other things.
Obama himself has indicated, “Not only do I want this stimulus package to deal with the immediate crisis, I want it also to lay the groundwork for long- term, sustained economic growth.”
Finally, Sen. Durbin also stated that in addition to infrastructure funding, there should also be a focus on supporting Amtrak, which is a “national priority.”
