Save America’s Pine Forests

Target: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

Goal: Protect the New Jersey Pinelands, one of the last great pine forests in the U.S., from devastation by an invasive beetle species

The once-vast pinelands on the Atlantic seaboard are in danger of being completely destroyed by global warming and a resulting invasion of destructive beetles. As the infestation advances northward, the southern pine beetle is killing thousands of acres of pine trees every year. Please urge the government of New Jersey and Governor Chris Christie to stop the devastation caused by this beetle infestation.

Global warming has allowed the southern pine beetle to thrive at higher latitudes where cold winter temperatures once killed  these insects. Each year, the beetle advances north, infesting and killing thousands of acres of pine forest. New Jersey’s famous Pinelands are infected and, if left unchecked, the infestation will quickly devastate the remnants of the  Eastern coastal pinelands in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and beyond. It is imperative that New Jersey act immediately and effectively.

Because the response to this crisis has thus far been slow and inadequate, half measures and indecisiveness will prove disastrous. New Jersey has failed to learn from the devastation caused by the beetle in Western North America, and from successful campaigns to limit destruction in the South and in neighboring Maryland.

By signing the petition below you are voicing your support for decisive action to protect the New Jersey Pinelands from devastation by an invasive beetle species.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Chris Christie,

As you may well know, the famous Pinelands of your home state of New Jersey are being decimated by invasive southern pine beetles. Clear scientific evidence points to this infestation being caused by climate change. I urge you to take decisive action to protect the New Jersey Pinelands from devastation caused by this invasive beetle.

Global warming has allowed the beetles to thrive at higher latitudes where cold winter temperatures once killed these beetles. New Jersey’s slow and inadequate response has left the famous Pinelands infected and, if left unchecked, the infestation will quickly devastate the remnants of the coastal pinelands in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and beyond. It is imperative that New Jersey acts immediately and effectively.

Because of the severity and urgency of the crisis, half measures and indecisiveness will prove disastrous. New Jersey has failed to learn from the devastation caused by the beetle in the West and from successful campaigns to limit destruction in the South and in neighboring Maryland.

As the Governor of New Jersey, you have the opportunity to be a leader in your state, the region, and the nation as you grapple with how to prevent environmental catastrophes from spreading beyond your state borders.  I urge you to seize this opportunity to be a leader, and not let indecision and equivocation lead to the destruction of New Jersey’s Pinelands and other eastern pine forests.

Please take decisive action to ensure the protection of the New Jersey Pinelands from devastation by this invasive beetle species.

Sincerely,
