Target: Bob Barker, former host of “The Price is Right”
Goal: Applaud Barker’s generous donation to save three elephants from being housed in cramped zoo.
Nearly every child has fond memories of visiting a zoo to see their favorite animals on display. But, behind the fun and enjoyable experience for humans, animals suffer greatly as they struggle to adjust to cramped quarters, are victims of inhumane treatment and sometimes die at the hands of apathetic zoo keepers.
The Toronto Zoo, which is a repeat offender when it comes to the obstruction of animal rights, has become known for its inability to care for elephants. To date, four elephants have met their demise because of inadequate living conditions, but the zoo refuses to shut down its elephant exhibition due to popularity and profits.
When television star and former “Price is Right” host Bob Barker heard of the inhumane treatment of three elephants, Iringa, Thika and Toka, he footed the nearly $1 million dollar bill to transport the elephants from their cramped, cold and depressing quarters at the Toronto Zoo, to the Performing Animal Welfare Society compound in California’s San Andrea hills.
Barker, who has long been an animal rights advocate, supported a petition and lobbied to relocate the elephants years ago, claiming that ‘…zoos [are] not appropriate [places] for such large animals…’ Once the two-year battle was over, Iringa, Thika and Toka made the 50-hour journey to California by truck, where they now roam around on hundreds of acres, bathe in large lakes and engage in therapeutic exercises in heated Jacuzzis. They are also adequately cared for by nutritionists, veterinarians and expert scientists.
In an interview, Barker revealed that the Toronto Zoo was everything but supportive, stating “The zoo found every possible obstacle to put in the way… [it was] totally uncooperative.”
By signing this petition you’ll thank Bob Barker for standing up against the inhumane behavior of the Toronto Zoo, and for being an advocate of animal rights.
Dear Bob Barker,
Your recent, valorous efforts to protect the lives of three elephants from certain mistreatment and death at the hands of the Toronto Zoo deserve to be applauded. It is saddening to think that zoos and zoo keepers are capable of inhumane acts that result in the demise of countless animals, in a place where you’d think their well-being would be top priority.
Because of your generous donation and dedication to the cause, Iringa, Thika and Toka can now roam freely in a safe, clean and suitable environment where they’ll forever be happy and cared for appropriately. None of this would have been possible without you, and I thank you wholeheartedly for your empathy.
