Waxman beats Dingell, ending his 28 year chairmanship
Articles — By forcechange on November 20, 2008 8:57 amThe full Democratic caucus voted on Thursday to oust Rep. Dingell as chairman of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee and replace him with Rep. Waxman from Beverly Hills. The vote was 137 to 122. Dingell had chaired this committee for the past 28 years and was known as the “protector” of the Detroit automakers, in some part due to his efforts to fight environmental and efficiency regulations.
Waxman, and the Energy and Commerce Committee are expected to play a prominent role during the Obama administration, as they will be responsible for legislation on climate change, energy, and health care, all issues Obama is expected to focus on.
Waxman, who is most publicly known for holding the baseball steroids hearings, also has a reputation as an ardent protector of the environment. Hopefully he will continue this legacy through his chairmanship.
