Target: Rose Parade President R. Scott Jenkins and Rose Parade sponsor Honda
Goal: Kick out SeaWorld and its legacy of animal cruelty from the Rose Parade
SeaWorld has a long history of abuse. They have killed orca whales, kidnapped their young and forced them to live in captivity, dramatically shortening their lives. The recent documentary “Blackfish” exposes the tragic tale of the killer whale Tilikum and how his inhumane treatment and captivity led to the deaths of three individuals. The Rose Parade and their sponsor Honda must kick out the SeaWorld float and send them a message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.
In association with The Orca Project, former SeaWorld trainers Jeffrey Ventre, MD and John Jett, Ph.D conducted a study that clearly shows evidence that captivity causes whales to have drastic social, health and aggression issues that often lead to their early death. One tragic example, documented in the study is that of Kadu V, a female orca who bled to death after almost 12 years in captivity at SeaWorld. The study states, “The wound was self-inflicted as she collided with another whale in a display of dominance. Over the next 45 minutes, and in view of the public, she slowly bled out, spouting blood from her blowhole until she died.”
PETA has been documenting SeaWorld’s horrible and abusive practices for years, frequently calling for a stop to the emotional and psychological trauma that their whales endure. In the book “Death at SeaWorld,” David Kirby reports on incidents where killer whales, insane from years of captivity, destroy their teeth on metal grates. The book also documents that male whales are subjected to being masturbated by the trainers in order to collect their semen. Does this sound like a place that you would like to take your family?
The Rose Parade and their sponsor Honda must not encourage these abusive practices. Sign the petition below to demand that the SeaWorld float be removed from the Rose Parade.
Dear Rose Parade President R. Scott Jenkins and Rose Parade sponsor Honda:
I am shocked that you have allowed SeaWorld to have a float in your upcoming parade. The poor treatment and terrible conditions that the animals at SeaWorld are forced to endure has been well documented in books, studies and films.
You can no longer turn a blind eye to the abusive practices at SeaWorld. By allowing them to participate in your festivities, you are associating your organizations with animal abuse and neglect.
I am urging you to kick SeaWorld out of the Rose Parade and take a stand against animal cruelty.
