Target: President Vladimir Putin, President Xi Jinping, President Viktor Yanukovych
Goal: Support the creation of an ocean reserve in Antarctica
A series of international talks about creating a 500,000 square mile ocean reserve in Antarctica have met their end in failure. Although 24 countries are involved, fierce opposition from Russia, China and the Ukraine have derailed the entire project. Urge the three dissenting countries to help save our world’s ecosystems.
The talks were held in Hobart, Tasmania where the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources hosted the discussion. The United States and New Zealand proposed the reserve to protect its unique ecosystems and vibrant wildlife. But the proposal could not be adopted because three countries were against plan; Russia, China, and Ukraine. Spokesperson Yuri Onodera from Japan who attended the meeting claimed that all three countries were greatly opposed to the idea. After a heated debate over the legalities and science behind claims made from various countries, their argument boiled down to the countries’ concerns about how the reserve would affect their economy, notably their fishing stocks and industries. Russia and Ukraine also have a history of questioning the legal and scientific reasoning behind making a reserve.
Of course, scientists were eager to fire back that reserves help maintain ecosystems that are affected by overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Another plan that was set forth by European countries was also shot down by the same countries. The spokesperson from Japan stated, “Once again, national interests and politics are a hurdle to the international interest of protecting the environment.”
This recent action by all three countries is an atrocity. Every nation on this planet should have deep concerns for the environment. The economy should not have priority because if our oceans are far too polluted or our green house gases get out of control, there is little chance that humans could reverse the problem. Sign this petition and urge all three countries to support the creation of this reserve.
Dear President Vladmir Putin, President Xi Jinping, President Viktor Yanukovych,
I wish to express my concerns in your refusal to take part in creating a 500,000 square mile reserve in Antarctic waters. Its creation will better protect the delicate ecosystems and wildlife that dwell in these waters, including whales, penguins and even the tiny krill. It deeply concerns me that you are more worried about your country’s economy and fishing industry than you are about the planet. An economy can be saved within a decade, but if the planet is doomed, it can take far longer for the effects to be reversed.
I am imploring you to sign on and support the creation of this reserve. There is an abundance of evidence claiming that a reserve will protect and preserve an ecosystem. Our planet is invaluable and I hope you will give it more priority in the future.
