Ban Cruel and Dangerous Horse Racing in Ireland

Target: Catherine Clancy, Lord Mayor of Cork, Ireland

Goal: Ban sulky horse racing in Ireland to ensure the safety of horses, pedestrians, and motorists

Sulky racing is a form of horse racing where horses pull two-wheeled carts. However, in Ireland, these races are putting horses at risk of serious injury and death. Horses are being raced far too young, without proper shoes, and across dangerous motorways. Ban sulky racing in Ireland until proper measures are taken to ensure the safety of horses, motorists, and pedestrians.

Motorists recently discovered a dead horse on the side of a road after sulky racers crashed it into the back of a parked car. According to The Daily Mail, the sulky drivers raced the horse on the busy N8 road that connects Cork to Dublin. When they crashed the horse into a stationary Volkswagen, they left the bloody horse to die on the side of the road.

Sulky racing compromises the safety of horses, drivers, and pedestrians in Ireland. It is entirely unsafe for horses pulling small carts to race on busy roadways, weaving in and out of traffic. Sign the below petition to urge the Irish government to prohibit unsafe and inhumane sulky horse racing.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Lord Mayor Clancy,

The country tradition of sulky horse racing in Ireland must come to an abrupt end. The recent tragedy about the horse left to die on the side of the N8 road between Cork and Dublin is one of the many examples of the dangers it poses. Not only is sulky racing an inhumane practice for horses on busy streets with traffic, but it also poses obvious risks to vehicle drivers and pedestrians in their path.

I am urging you to work with equestrians and local safety groups to make sulky racing safer. If you cannot devise adequate safety measures, then the racing must be banned altogether. To begin, sulky drivers must be required to wear high-visibility jackets and helmets. They must staff off the busy streets and restrict their racing to designated courses. They must use healthy horses that are well-equipped for the stressing of racing and cared for humanely.

Thank you for doing your part to keep drivers, pedestrians and horses safe in your community. Due to the sport’s prominence in Cork, you must set an example for the surrounding communities before more devastating tragedies like this one occur.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
