Goal: Seek justice for mare who was stabbed
In Warsaw, Indiana, a rescued mare named Sassy was found dead, from what appeared to be multiple stab wounds. Her devastated owner, Christina Meade, said, “The way she was laying tells me she fought, she was probably trying to get out of the stall,” says Meade.
Meade checked on her horse just a few hours before the mare presumably died, before heading off to the store. She says Sassy was just fine, but when she came back she found her laying down in her stall.
“I thought maybe she was sleeping so I just kept calling her name and then I realized she wasn’t. I tried to pick her head up and that’s when I had blood all over my hands,” said Meade. She couldn’t find anything that would hurt the horse in the stall, and guessed someone must have stabbed the mare. “I think that when we pulled up, whoever it was, knew they couldn’t go out the front door. So, they tried to go out the back window and there’s blood, you know, around the window, and there’s a rock laying on the ground that has blood on it, which one of the abrasions on her chest, I think maybe, looked like someone threw the rock at her. The skin is missing off her chest and it’s about the same size as the rock, like someone threw it pretty hard at her,” says Meade. “Whoever did it they had to have had blood all over them”. She said that the barn door she always keeps closed was propped open and their was a path through the field like someone had run through it.
Meade has words for whoever did this to her mare. “Sassy was my heart; she was the most awesome horse. I am not going to stop protecting horses or people like you from hurting them,” explains Meade. She buried Sassy in the yard the day after her death. She is making a headstone for the grave and says she may grow carrots in the area, which were Sassy’s favorite treats.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department is investigating this brutal murder. They would not release any more information, but hope to find the perpetrator. Demand justice for this sweet mare and her devastated owner.
