Target: Shinzō Abe, Prime Minister of Japan
Goal: Clean up leaking radiation water at Fukushima’s power plant
An independent consulting company recently found that radiation-infused water is leaking all over the Fukushima power plant and that there are no accurate figures for the radiation levels. Now that the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) admitted that over 300 tons of highly radioactive water leaked out from a storage tank there, the power station is in a state of crisis. Nuclear experts fear that the situation is far worse than the power companies or government is willing to admit. Clean up radiation leaks at Fukushima before the hazard becomes impossible to manage.
A Japanese nuclear energy watchdog group recently elevated the radiation incident level from one to three on an international scale. The thousand tanks that were built to hold leaking water are almost at capacity, yet extra tons of water are being added to them every day. Not only is radiation-infected water leaking from the tanks, but also from basements, cracks, and buildings. According to oceanographic scientist and Fukushima inspector, Dr. Ken Buesseler, “We’ve been saying since 2011 that the reactor site is still leaking whether that’s the buildings and the ground water or these new tank releases. There’s no way to really contain all of this radioactive water on site.”
Once this radiation leaks out and seeps into the ground water, the entire country will be vulnerable to radiation poisoning. Since this ground water flows to the ocean, marine life will suffer from the effects of radiation and commercially-consumed seafood will be contaminated. Sign the below petition to urge the Japanese government to put more resources into nuclear clean up at Fukushima.
Dear Prime Minister Abe,
The radiation situation at Fukushima is worsening and you must address the health concerns of your people. Water infused with radiation is leaking out of various parts of the power plant and seeping into the ground water used for public consumption. These leakages are flowing out to the sea and contaminating the open waters used for commercial fishing and transportation.
I am urging you to work with local environmental groups to clean up the existing radiation leaks at Fukushima and prevent further leaks from happening. Scientists and nuclear experts agree that something must be done immediately to preserve the nation from irreversible harm. If another earthquake happens to strike Japan, these huge amounts of radioactive water will become vulnerable to catastrophic spillage. If the power plant is unable to maintain all of the radioactive water on site, you must devise a method for safely containing it.
