Target: Donald Trump, President of The Trump Organization
Goal: Compensate students who attended fake Trump University
Trump Entrepreneur Institute or “Trump University” promises students that they will learn everything that made the multimillionaire real estate tycoon the financial success story he is today. Unfortunately, many of the aspiring business titans who paid thousands to take classes have found they only received useless seminars and photo ops at an institution with no academic license. And the state of New York is taking legal action in a $40 million civil lawsuit.
State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said that the school encouraged over 5,000 students “to spend tens of thousands of dollars they couldn’t afford for lessons they never got” using Trump’s celebrity. According to a remarkable list of nine allegations compiled by Mother Jones, the Trump Entrepreneur Institute participated in actions including lying about its status as a school, paying instructors who often had no real estate experience and even encouraging students to give false information to credit card companies.
So, how has Trump responded to this? By claiming Schneiderman is persecuting him as a political opponent of President Obama. In a website made in response to the suit, Trump states his “University” has “98% approval. That’s a better approval rating than even Harvard. Let’s be real: if this weren’t Trump, there would be no investigation!”
This may sound funny if it was not so tragic. Donald Trump, for a paycheck, defrauded several thousand people who believed they were receiving a real education at an institution that in fact had no academic license. Especially in a time of spiraling education costs, students need to feel secure they are receiving the quality education they are paying for. By signing this petition, you will demand Trump apologize and compensate the students who lost thousands from his fake university.
Dear Mr. Trump,
Your Trump Entrepreneur Institute, also known as Trump University, promises students they will learn everything that led to your financial success with specialized seminars and real-estate instructors picked by you personally. However, it is currently being sued by the state of New York in a $40 million civil lawsuit for defrauding students.
The allegations against your school are serious. These include lying about its lack of an academic license to students, paying instructors who many times have no real estate experience and even telling students to give false information to credit card companies so they can have their limits raised. It appears you have used your celebrity status to convince students to, in the words of Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, “spend tens of thousands of dollars they couldn’t afford for lessons they never got.”
So, how have you responded to this? You claim Schniderman is targeting you because you are an opponent of President Obama. On your website, you state Trump University has “98% approval. That’s a better approval rating than even Harvard. Let’s be real: if this weren’t Trump, there would be no investigation!”
These claims of political persecution would be humorous if they were not so tragic. They are a way for you to avoid responsibility for convincing several thousand people to sign up for an unlicensed institution that gave them no real education. I ask that you apologize to the current and former students who were scammed by the Trump Entrepreneur Institute and compensate them in full for their financial losses.
