Protect Right Whales From Extinction

Target: The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)

Goal: Protect North Atlantic Right Whales from extinction.

There are less than 500 North Atlantic Right Whales left today and their numbers are continuing to drop. Ships moving too quickly through their habitats can strike and often times kill Right Whales if they are not careful. There is a law requiring ships slow down when around their habitat that will expire at the end of 2013. Demand the National Marine Fisheries Service remove the expiration date and continue to protect North Atlantic Right Whales.

The habitat of the greatly endangered species is in the way of many large ships as they move in and out of ports. Ships who cannot see or do not respond quickly enough to whales strike them and often times this strike is fatal. These ships strikes are currently the single greatest threat posed against right whales.

The ship strike rule that was published in 2008 requires ships to slow down to 10 knots when they are in known right whale territory. This speed will allow ships to move through the water more carefully and avoid right whales when seen. If by chance they cannot avoid a ship strike it is more likely that the strike will not be fatal at this speed.

When the rule was published it was intended to protect the right whale from going extinct. There are only about 400 right whales left still. If the Ship Strike Rule expires right whales will be left with no protection and more than likely become extinct. Demand that the NMFS remove the expiration date from the rule in order to keep right whales from extinction.

PETITION LETTER

Dear National Marine Fisheries Service,

With less than 500 North Atlantic Right Whales left today there is an urgency to stop their numbers from decreasing. As known ships moving too quickly through their habitats can strike and often times kill right whales if they are not careful. The law requiring ships to slow down when around their habitat must be rid of its expiration date in order to continue to protect right whales.

The habitat of the greatly endangered species is in the way of many large ships as they move in and out of ports. Ships who cannot see or do not respond quickly enough to whales strike them and often times this strike is fatal. Because ships strikes are currently the single greatest threat posed against right whales the Ship Strike Rule is a necessity.

Requiring ships to slow down to 10 knots when they are in known right whale territory is needed to keep right whales safe. This speed will allow ships to move through the water more carefully and avoid right whales when seen. If by chance they cannot avoid a ship strike it is more likely that the strike will not be fatal at this speed.

There are only about 400 right whales left still. If the Ship Strike Rule expires right whales will be left with no protection and more than likely become extinct. Keep the Ship Strike Rule from becoming expired, remove its sunset clause.

Sincerely,
