Target: President Gjorge Ivanov
Goal: Bring those committing LGBT hate crimes in Macedonia to justice
The government of Macedonia must ensure a fair and exhaustive investigation into a series of attacks against the LGBT community the last two months. In particular, an attack on an LGBT Support Center at the beginning of the Gay Pride Week was particularly cruel. Other attacks included an assault on the home of a well-known actor and his partner in their home. Officials in the government need to investigate these incidents and bring those responsible to justice.
The attack on the LGBT center in Skopje in early July consisted of a mob of about thirty people throwing stones, shouting derogatory slogans and holding signs. A police officer on the scene tasked to prevent any physical violence against the LGBT members inside the center was wounded by one of the projectiles. Towards the end of the gathering, some members of the group climbed onto the roof of the support center and attempted to set fire to the roof planks by dousing them with gasoline. The police and fire departments conducted an investigation into the attempted arson but have not uncovered any leads into who was responsible.
Since 2005, Macedonia has been trying to gain entry into the European Union. Part of this effort is to adhere to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. This charter prohibits discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation. These recent mob assaults against members of the LGBT community go directly against the charter. The Macedonian government needs to stick to its commitment to protect the LGBT community. The authorities should also do all they can to prevent further incidents of this nature. Sign this petition to demand fair treatment of the LGBT community in Macedonia.
Dear President Gjorge Ivanov,
Recent mob assaults against the LGBT community in your country go against the Charter of Fundamental Rights in the European Union. If your country wishes to become part of the European Union, your government must ensure the protection of this community. The right to follow whatever sexual orientation your citizens please is a basic human right.
I ask that your security forces do all that they can to bring those responsible for these attacks to justice. Doing so will ensure a better chance for your country to join the European Union as well as improve the human rights record for your country. Doing so will provide all your citizens with a chance to thrive socially, politically and, if given an equal chance, in the economy.
