Turkish Government Must Take Responsibility for the Armenian Genocide

Target: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan

Goal: Convince the Turkish government to admit that it was responsible for the genocide of the Armenian people in 1915.

A significant body of historical evidence supports the notion that, during and after World War I, Ottoman Turkey systemically murdered about 1.5 million out of its 2 million Armenian citizens.  No government of Turkey has ever acknowledged the criminal or genocidal nature of this violence.  Prime Minister Erdogan must become the first Turkish leader to announce that the Young Turk government was exclusively responsible for the deliberate, institutionalized killing of the Armenian people.

Most of the world has already recognized that the crimes perpetrated against the Armenian people did occur, that they constituted genocide, and that the Young Turk government committed these acts deliberately.  Unfortunately, the Turkish government itself continues to deny all of these facts.  Their stance is that any violence that Armenians may have experienced occurred as a natural byproduct of warfare.  However, both the way in which the violence was centrally planned and the ethnic, exterminatory basis of the killing make it impossible to characterize it as anything other than genocide.  It is past time that Turkey admits and fully discloses the role it played in the Armenian Holocaust.

Admitting that the Armenian Genocide occurred is the first step toward rectifying one of the modern world’s most horrific catastrophes.  Continuing to deny the genocide is a grave insult to those who perished in the concentration camps and elsewhere.  By signing the petition below, you will be telling Prime Minister Erdogan that Holocaust denialism is unacceptable on every level.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey Recep Erdogan,

The heinous acts perpetrated against the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923 represent perhaps the second greatest atrocity of the modern era.  Over a million people were killed because of their race, and a rich ethnic tradition was nearly eradicated.

The wounds of the Armenian Genocide have not yet been healed.  Although the vast majority of academic and legal institutions today have already recognized that these events occurred, the government most responsible for these horrific crimes – yours – continues to insult survivors and their families by denying the crimes of the Young Turk government.

I am demanding that you put an end to Holocaust denialism and bring Turkey into the modern world.  Please admit that the Ottoman government deliberately massacred the Armenian people, and apologize to the world on its behalf.

Sincerely,

Signed with reservations…There are atrocities happening there now, not back in 1915. These are a priority in mind, then address this one.

While your support is appreciated, but your comment just doesn’t make any sense. Atrocities happened in the past and happen now. ALL should be condemned and perpetrators and their supporters held responsible for their actions. Just because something happened in the past does not mean it can be put on the back burner or ignored, or given less priority. Remember, this Genocide was the base of the Holocaust and couple of other Genocides as the perpetrators thought they would get away with what they did, just like what the Turks did.
