Target: City Councilman Chad Manspeaker
Goal: Applaud Chad Manspeaker for his proposal to ban LGBT discrimination in Topeka
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals face discrimination in many different ways and in different areas of this country. One of the most discriminative groups towards the LGBT community is the Westboro Baptist Church. It is known for intense hatred of gay people and picketing with hateful words. The home of the Westoboro Baptist Church is in Topeka, Kansas, where a new bill has been filed to ban LGBT discrimination.
The bill was proposed in a statement on the City Councilman Chad Manspeaker’s website. Manspeaker is a Democrat who wants to include protections for LGBT individuals in the Topeka Human Rights Commission. In a statement Manspeaker said, “It is time for us Topekans to remove the cloud of hate and bigotry from our city and to show the world we are an inclusive and loving community who protects all of its citizens.” It is evident that Manspeaker is dedicated to making his city more progressive when it comes to LGBT rights and proving that Topeka is an accepting place.
If the new bill passes, the Westboro Baptist Church will face restrictions on their normal activities. This new ordinance is necessary because of the harsh discrimination brought on by the church and other groups. LGBT people around the world need to know that they are protected by the law just like everyone else. Commend Councilman Manspeaker for his efforts to pass the discrimination ban.
Dear Councilman Manspeaker,
Many cities and states have passed laws that ban discrimination against the LGBT community. You hope for Topeka, Kansas to become the next city to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Kansas is known to not be tolerant of the LGBT community in many areas of the red state. This new ordinance has the potential to prove to the country that Kansas can become progressive.
Since Topeka is the home of the extreme Westboro Baptist Church, it is important that this new bill be passed and implemented. LGBT people face a lot of discrimination not only from this church, but from many other individuals and groups in the conservative area. It needs to be stopped. Passing this bill in order to ensure that everyone is treated equally is a great step in the advancement of human rights, specifically LGBT rights.
The struggle for gay rights continues as this country becomes more divided between progressives and conservatives. Your filing of this new bill shows that you want to make this country more tolerant of the LGBT community and stand on the side of progression. Thank you for your efforts to make Topeka a more accepting city.
