Target: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deparment
Goal: Let the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department know that the unlawful profiling of minorities is not acceptable.
According to a two-year investigation into the nation’s largest sheriff’s department, excessive targeting of black and hispanic people during searches and seizures has been going on for years. The reports from the investigation found that officers made outwardly racist comments towards minorities in a variety of situations, and they were also found to have illegally made searches and arrests on a number of occasions. This activity went on in two cities just north of the city of Los Angeles. It is clear that this type of blatant racism cannot be tolerated any longer.
In addition to reports that officers in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department profiled people to search based on their race, there are a string of other allegations that are just as bad. These allegations include officers making racist comments towards minorities during search, seizures, and arrests, publicly stating that “all new African American residents of the region were gang members,” detaining people of color in police cars for small incidences like traffic violations, and using excessive force on black and hispanic people in situations where it was unnecessary.
Police officers are supposed to work to protect the citizens in their area of jurisdiction and enforce the laws of the land, not use their personal prejudices to unjustly attack minorities. The behavior exhibited by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is despicable, and they must know that it will not be tolerated or accepted. Sign this petition to let this department know that what they have done and are currently doing to minorities is wrong.
Dear Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,
Recently, reports of a two-year investigation have surfaced that supply evidence of severe racial profiling and discrimination towards the citizens of your jurisdiction. Among the findings of the investigation include allegations that officers made racist comments towards minorities during search, seizures, and arrests, publicly stated that “all new African American residents of the region were gang members,” detained people of color in police cars for minor incidences like traffic violations, and used excessive force on black and hispanic people in situations where it was unnecessary.
This type of behavior is not what officers of the law should be exhibiting. They are there solely to protect and serve the people and enforce the laws of the land in an unbiased manner. The fact that your department would condone these actions displayed by officers is completely deplorable in every way, and it cannot go on any longer. Today, I am adding my name to this petition to express my complete disgust in your department and to urge you to put an end to this outward display of racism. We have come a long way in this country in regards to racism and discrimination, so I cannot sit by and allow you to set us back any further by allowing these things to go on.
