Target: Senator Wendy Davis (D-TX)
Goal: Commend the Texas Senator’s 13-hour filibuster against radical abortion bill
A one-woman, 13-hour filibuster shut down the SB 5 bill that would have made abortion, after 20-weeks of fertilization, virtually illegal in Texas. It would have forced all but five clinics in the state to shut down and close their doors. Considering the size and population of the state, it would have been nearly impossible to receive services. This would have led to women to dangerous, alternative extremes to have the procedure done.
Wendy Davis showed what it means to stand up for something you firmly believe in. For 13 hours, she and thousands of her supporters stood ground at the courthouse. During these 13 hours, Davis was not allowed to sit, lean, eat, drink, use the restroom or even talk about anything other than the SB 5 bill. Governor Rick Perry (R) called for a special “second session” in which efforts to block the bill may not be received as well as Davis’. Regardless, Davis and thousands of citizens’ dedication to denounce the bill has been received and noted by all lawmakers.
Around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, she called SB 5’s defeat “an incredible victory for Texas women and those who love them.” Applaud this senator for standing up for women’s rights in Texas.
Dear Senator Wendy Davis,
Thank you for your unwavering strength in fighting for women’s rights in Texas. The thousands of supporters that stood with you on June 26, 2013 is a testament of the people’s voice against such a radically oppressing bill. Shutting down all but a mere handful of abortion clinics in Texas would have made abortion virtually illegal. The United States of America was founded and is based upon the people’s freedom, and this tyrannical bill went directly against that ideology.
The amount of criticism and blunt “bullying” you endured for standing up to this cause is ludicrous, but comes with the territory in such an extreme position. More than 52 percent of the Texas population agrees with your stance and against that of Governor Perry. Revoking Planned Parenthood funding is a recent trend infiltrating states, something the people canot allow to happen. Positive, viable change is only possible with lawmakers such as yourself. The people thank you tremendously.
