Target: Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister.
Goal: Halt the forced eviction of Israeli citizens.
The recent law proposed in front of the Israeli Knesset, “Law for Regularizing Bedouin Habitation in the Negev – 2013”, is a violation of international law. This law would lead to the forced eviction of thousands of Bedouin. All of those who would be subjected to eviction are legal citizens of Israel. The Bedouin community in Israel has suffered decades of mistreatment by the government. This recent law would strip all legal safeguards against home demolitions and forced evictions in order to clear space for other citizens in the Negev/Naqab desert area.
As stated previously, this law would violate the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which Israel is a party to. The Covenant guarantees the right to adequate housing and to non-discrimination when it comes to property. The law is also in violation of a UN regulation that states that evictions may only be used as a last resort. The Bedouin community was not given accurate and timely information regarding evictions, and was not engaged with by the government. In addition, alternative proposals made by the Bedouin community were widely ignored within the Israeli government.
The Israeli government has never recognized any of the 35 Bedouin villages in the Negev/Naqab region despite the fact that many of these villages existed before the Israeli state originated. Sign this petition and demand that the Israeli government grant these villages legal status and immediately halt all forced evictions.
Dear Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
Your government still has a chance to prevent the human rights violation that is the forced eviction of Bedouin villages in the Negev/Naqab region. Doing so will show that your government respects the human rights of all Israeli citizens. Some of these Bedouin communities are older than the Israeli state itself. Your government owes it to these citizens to respect their right to property.
The legal status of Bedouin communities must be ensured. I also ask that your government begin providing these communities with adequate public services that are available to most Israeli citizens. This includes safe drinking water and proper sanitation. I urge you to reject the “Law for Regularizing Bedouin Habitation in the Negev – 2013”.
