Stop Japan’s Commercial Whaling

Target: The International Court of Justice

Goal: Prohibit Japan from commercially whaling in  Antarctica.

Australia has filed a court case against Japan in the International Court of Justice. An international moratorium forbids commercial whaling, and Japan is trying to defend its whaling program as research. However, Australia claims that Japan is breaking the law in order to hunt whales for their meat. Japan has long been under the scrutiny of several anti-whaling countries and organizations for abusing the law in order to sell whale meat commercially.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Until then Japan was heavily involved in commercial whaling, but even after the moratorium was signed into law, Japan has continued the practice using the scientific research provision in the agreement. The meat from the scientific whale hunts is then sold in stores and restaurants. Most IWC oppose the practice of selling meat.

In 2012 Australia filed a court case in The Hague to stop Japan from whaling in the Antarctic Ocean. Several countries, scientists and environmental organizations consider Japan’s whaling program to be unnecessary and have even described the practice as a disguised commercial whaling operation. The Hague is set to make its decision on the case by the end of 2013. If Japan loses the case it will be forbidden from hunting whales in Antarctic waters.

Please sign the petition to support Australia in its case against Japan’s whaling program and urge the International Court of Justice to prohibit Japan from commercial hunting. Another species should not be put in danger of extinction because of the greed of one country.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear International Court of Justice,

By the end of the year 2013 you are due to make a decision on Australia’s case against Japan’s intent to practice commercial whaling the waters of Antarctica. Japan has long been known to perform these whale hunts under the pretence of scientific research. Many anti-whaling countries, activists and environmental organizations have deemed Japan’s whaling program unnecessary for any kind of research.

Commercial hunting of any species is an endangerment to the continuation of it. Many species are endangered or extinct because of the careless mass killings of animals. I urge you to stop Japan from expanding its whaling practice and forbid it to continue the program in any waters worldwide.

Sincerely,
