Stop Google From Funding Climate Change Deniers

Target: Google CEO Larry Page

Goal: Stop funding climate change-denying Competitive Enterprise Institute

A recent transparency report about the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), one of the most infamous agencies of climate change denial propaganda, listed its largest outside sources of funds for its annual dinner. To the surprise of many (given the company’s green image), Google was revealed to be the biggest single donor. In the aftermath of this revelation, Google has found itself the target of anger from many environmentalists and climate change adhering scientists.

Those who care about the environment have a right to be outraged at Google. For more than a decade, the CEI has led the charge against the majority of those in the scientific community who contend that ongoing worldwide climate change is manmade. Supported politically and financially by big fossil fuel companies, as well as rail companies that move coal and oil, the CEI has debated the causes of climate change and argued that the free market will better protect the environment than the government ever can.

Moreover, the CEI has many times courted controversy and elicited criticism for deliberately twisting the facts or misrepresenting the words of experts to bolster its case. To name just one example: the CEI used Science magazine as a source for television ads that claimed that carbon dioxide is a beneficial environmental factor and that global warming poses no threat to the world. The magazine’s staff angrily denounced CEI, saying that that the ads completely misrepresented “the conclusions of the two cited [articles]…by selective referencing.” Said one writer, “[t]hese television ads are a deliberate effort to confuse and mislead the public about the global warming debate.”

It is nigh unthinkable that Google would support these views and actions. Please sign the petition below to demand that Larry Page’s company fully disclose any other donations it has made to climate change-denying groups, and pledge to never fund such groups again.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Larry Page:

It has recently become public knowledge that your company, Google, is the largest single donor in contributions to the Competitive Enterprise Institute for its annual dinner. That institute has spent more than a decade leading the crusade against the majority of scientists who contend that climate change is manmade. Funded by big oil and coal, the CEI uses deceptive tactics to mislead the public and misrepresent the arguments of scientific authorities. Time and again, the institute has been caught cherry picking or playing fast and loose with the facts at hand to bolster its case.

This is not the type of activity that should be condoned by a company with the prestige and influence that Google has. I demand that your company cease funding the CEI and groups like it, and I ask that you refrain from doing so as long as you lead the company.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

    PFFFFFTTT.
    What utter… FOOLS.
Denying climate change won’t make it go away, you know. Signed. Google needs to reconsider. I’m ashamed to have used it as my main search engine.

  3. Mmmm. Food for thought this is.
I am thinking about starting a new company based on sustainable principles.
I won’t be able to use Google or any of it’s associated products if it supports the enemies of sustainability as my company will have to be as sustainable as possible.
If we all start looking around for alternatives to Google, this issue may be the beginning of the end of Google’s dominance of the internet.
