Commend City’s Ambitious Climate Action Plan

Target: The City Council of Seattle, Washington

Goal: Commend city for adopting an ambitious climate action plan

The city of Seattle, Washington recently passed a sweeping climate action plan, with the goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050. Much of the work necessary to achieve this goal will begin within the next 15 years. Developed through an encouraging collaboration between city officials and community members, this plan provides a long-term prospect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to build prosperous communities.

Seattle’s climate plan will focus on three areas of weakness: transportation and land use, building energy, and solid waste. The plan seeks to tackle transportation issues through improvements to the city’s bus system, safer walking and biking routes, and an expansion of the region’s light-rail system. According to the Seattle Times, these steps would reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent.

In order to limit building energy costs, the plan calls for the use of smart meters and energy audit, with the goal of improving the largest and least efficient commercial and multi-family residential buildings. City officials intend to continue projects to weatherize homes and to require energy-use disclosures when houses or apartments are rented or sold. Not only will the city become more energy efficient, but homeowners will benefit from more comfortable interiors, better indoor air quality and lower utility bills. The plan also incorporates strategies to prepare buildings and homes for adverse climate effects such as identifying flood prone areas and adopting land management practices that would account for rising sea levels.

Many cities have designed prioritized climate action plans as a response to hotter average temperatures and more extreme weather. By signing this petition, you are commending the city of Seattle for joining this movement and adopting an initiative that will work towards protecting communities and the environment in the future.
