Demand Tougher Punishment for Animal Abusers

Target: Governor Chris Christie

Goal: Strengthen animal cruelty legislation to stop animal abusers

Patrick’s Law (S 1303) is a new law that calls for tougher punishments for people who abuse animals. It would increase civil and criminal penalties for animal abuse and neglect. This law has been passed by New Jersey Legislature, and now needs to be signed into law by Governor Chris Christie.

Patrick’s Law was inspired by Patrick the dog, found emaciated and near death the day before St. Patrick’s Day of 2011. His owner had reportedly thrown him in a garbage bag and dropped him down the garbage chute from the 22nd floor of his apartment building. Patrick was later found by a maintenance worker in the building, who reported that every bone in the dog’s body was protruding due to starvation. Thankfully Patrick was taken to a veterinary hospital that offers 24-hour care, and later recovered. Patrick was lucky enough to be rescued, however not all animals are as lucky to survive abuse and neglect.

Encourage Governor Chris Christie to support Patrick’s Law, putting it into effect immediately. Animal owners need to know that abuse and neglect are not tolerable, and that severe punishment awaits them should they decide to abuse or neglect their animals. Hopefully with such severe punishment put in place, owners will make more compassionate choices, giving their animals up for adoption if they are not a fit “parent” for a pet.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chris Christie,

Please sign the bill, “Patrick’s Law,” passed by the New Jersey Legislature, into law effective immediately. Patrick the dog suffered unimaginable torture and neglect, being thrown down a garbage chute, starved and abandoned, yet was lucky enough to survive. So many others suffer abuse and neglect in silence, and many animals do not survive owner abuse.

By putting severe civil and criminal punishments in place for individuals who choose to abuse or neglect animals, hopefully owners will make more compassionate choices in regard to their animals. Such punishments may deter individuals who are unfit owners from obtaining animals in the first place, and would hopefully encourage owners who abuse or neglect their animals to simply give them up for adoption by dropping them off at their local shelter. So many lives could be saved through Patrick’s Law. Please sign this law into effect today.

Sincerely,
