Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Goal: Urge the House of Representatives to vote against funding reductions for food assistance
Recently, the U.S. House Appropriations committee has proposed a 20 percent cut to Food for Peace, a program that has helped over three billion starving people worldwide. This reduction in funds means that eight million people around the world that are starving because of climate issues and warfare will no longer be able to receive enough food for survival.
In our world today, one out of every eight people is starving. This equals about 870 million people worldwide who are unable to break out of poverty and reach their full potential because they don’t even have their most basic needs met. Food programs have traditionally helped with these problems in many countries around the world by not only providing food and nutrition to people in poverty but also educating them about the best ways to maintain their health. Cutting funds for these programs will thus be devastating to those around the world whose lives literally depend on the programs’ help.
The House is scheduled to vote on this issue this month.
By signing this petition you will help urge the U.S. House of Representatives to vote against food assistance budget cuts so that Food for Peace can continue to save lives.
Dear U.S House of Representatives,
I learned recently that the House Appropriations committee has proposed a 20 percent cut for food assistance programs and that the House is scheduled to vote on the issue this month. I urge you to vote against this proposal, as cutting funds for food assistance will mean that millions around the world will again be at risk of malnutrition and starvation.
The Food for Peace program has done a lot in the past to help save lives. I have heard about the story of Lucia, a woman from Guatemala whose 16-month-old baby, Maria, was constantly sick, poorly fed, and underdeveloped as a result. Through participating in a program by Food for Peace, she was able to get resources and education to better feed her family, and Maria’s condition has now improved greatly since the beginning of the program.
We should help more people feed their families and satisfy their basic needs, so that people around the world have the chance to overcome poor conditions and reach their greatest potential. At the very least, we should continue to do as much as we have done in the past.
