Target: Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper
Goal: Commend Colorado governor for allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses
Colorado recently passed a bill allowing undocumented motorists to acquire driver’s licenses under the auspices that all motor vehicle drivers should know the proper rules of the road, be able drive to work, be identified in car accidents, and be able to be insured. Issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants does just that; they do not serve as identification to board airplanes, open bank accounts, or vote, as many neo-conservatives might fear. The licenses allow undocumented immigrants to properly learn the rules of the road in a formal setting (i.e. driver’s ed), so that they can be better, safer drivers. This is good for everyone on the road, making the roads a safer place to drive. It also allows undocumented drives to bear their share of responsibility in the case of an accident and not feel the need to flee in any such case.
Colorado is joining the ranks of other states to pass similar bills such as New Mexico, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington State (Connecticut is soon to join). These states are leading the way for forthcoming immigration law reform. While the nation is debating what to do about the large and ever increasing number of undocumented immigrants in our country, these states recognize that we must begin to assimilate undocumented immigrants into our society.
Furthermore, the question of basic human rights is raised. We, the citizens of the United States, must recognize that our quality of life is higher than that of the majority of the world. People living in poverty will always be trying to get out, just like you or I would, and escape to the land of plenty. Let’s tell Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper that we stand behind him in his decision to make roads safer and acknowledgment of basic human rights.
Dear Governor John Hickenlooper,
Thank you for signing the bill allowing undocumented immigrant drivers to acquire driver’s licenses. As a fellow motorist I am much more comfortable knowing that everyone on the road has a path to formally learn the rules of the road, as well as drive an insured vehicle. It’s beneficial for all parties involved.
Furthermore, our country’s attempts to thwart illegal immigration have been unsuccessful and led to the loss of many human lives. By allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, you recognize that it is time to assimilate them into our society. Also, the bill you signed begins to call to attention that undocumented immigrants are human beings deserving an equal quality of life.
I commend you for taking decisive action for motorist safety and human rights. By signing the bill you are saying you care about the citizens of your state and your fellow human beings. I hope you will continue to keep an open mind in the future as new immigration bills for and against human rights are pushed in Washington. Thank you.
