Target: Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto
Goal: Provide justice to woman sexually assaulted in a courtroom and then arrested for protesting
In a Nevada courtroom, a woman was recently arrested during a simple divorce proceeding for accusing a court officer of sexually assaulting her. The woman was apparently subjected to a drug search for no valid reason, and a court officer fondled her buttocks and breasts; after being subjected to this mistreatment, the victim asked the hearing master in charge of the court to have a female officer handle drug searches instead. The presiding hearing master looked on calmly as the situation escalated, and she even allowed the accused sexual assailant to arrest his accuser after ignoring the woman’s pleas.
The officer claimed that the victim was being arrested for making a false accusation against a police officer; legal experts have been consulted and have declared that this arrest has no basis in the law. The entire exchange was caught on closed-circuit television, and the resulting video has since gone viral on the internet and has sparked outrage across the board.
While the officer who arrested and sexually assaulted the woman has been investigated and terminated, the hearing master and other officials on the scene have not been reprimanded or fired for their behavior. Recent internal investigations have demonstrated that the court in question has been the subject of an inordinately high amount of accusations of sexual assault and corruption. Please sign the petition below to demand that Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto lead a full investigation of the matter and seek justice for the woman so shockingly deprived of it.
Dear Caterine Cortez Masto:
In your state, a woman was recently subjected to a harrowing experience when, during a routine family court proceeding, she was sexually assaulted by a court officer and then unjustifiably arrested for protesting her mistreatment. Since video of this incident has gone viral, local news investigations have found that the court in question has come under fire for its unusually high number of accusations of sexual assault and other misdeeds.
While the offending officer has been fired, it is clear that the problem is larger than just one man; other officers of the court, including the presiding hearing master, stood idly by and let this misdeed take place. I demand that you launch a full and serious investigation of this issue and make sure that this court is not allowed to victimize any more citizens.
