Target: Juan Jose Herrera, environmental overseer at Petroperu Oil
Goal: Stop potential oil drilling on indigenous Peruvian land
Oil giant Petroperu recently announced plans for future drilling on sacred lands for 42 million barrels of oil. The Achuar people, located in the Peruvian Amazon, recently fought off a Canadian oil company (Tailsman) from drilling there and continue to fight tooth-and-nail in hopes of driving Petroperu from their land.
The President of Petroperu claims to be working side-by-side with the Achuar people but the tribe’s own president says they haven’t heard anything from the company. “We have opposed all the companies here, beginning with Arco, then Occidental, and most recently, Talisman. Like we did for all of those, we will make it impossible for Petroperu to enter,” read a firm sentiment from the Achuar to the Peruvian president.
Drilling will contaminate the rivers and poison their fish among many other undoable environmental tragedies, all of which have happened due to pre-1995 drilling. Warning off oil companies from drilling on this location are all major victories for indigenous rights, and the unrelenting loyalty to their heritage is admirable. Sign this petition aligning your voice with the Achuar and fight the good fight against big oil to save our environment from further destruction.
Dear Juan Jose Herrera,
Canadian oil company Tailsman was recently protested out of the Peruvian Amazon, along with others such as Arco and Occidental. Despite unrelenting protests from locals, Petroperu has decided to move in, destroy lush environment and displace indigenous peoples from their sacred land, 42 million barrels of environmentally poisonous oil being the only motive.
The River Corrientes is contaminated from pre-1995 drilling and [Lot 1-AB] has been declared a Zone of Environmental Emergency. By drilling here, you are only contributing to the slow demise of our planet. Over 20 tribes, the Amazon Watch and environmentalists worldwide ask your company to leave the planet unscathed and in good health, not raped of natural resources from lands of which do not belong to your company.
The Achuar ask for nothing but peace and their land to be left untouched by companies whose only interest is a quick dollar. Fish stocks, river water and the personal health of Achuar peoples will indubitably suffer. Please leave the indigenous and our environment in peace; our protests will not relent until that message is received loud and clear.
