Goal: Pledge to adopt rather than purchase puppies bred in puppy mills
Commercial breeding facilities known as puppy mills place the production of the dogs over their welfare, and the dogs are rarely given the proper care and attention they require. In an established puppy mill called Tanni’s, located in Arkansas, dogs were found with lesions on their paws, matted hair, skin problems, and severe dental disease. At Gullet Kennel, a dog was left tied to the flatbed of a truck, where it proceeded to fall and hang itself. These places are not necessary when there are so many stray dogs lost and hungry in the streets already. Animal shelters care for six to eight million animals per year. Of those, three to four million are euthanized. By signing this petition, you will promise to discourage the use of puppy mills.
Puppies are often kept in undersized and inadequately cleaned cages. Mills are also known to inbreed their dogs in order to maximize their output for the least amount of money. This can result in genetic defects and psychological issues.
Only twenty-six states in the U.S. have laws regarding the care of and prevention of abuse towards animals in commercial puppy mills. In the future, please be sure to obtain your loving companion from an animal shelter. All animal welfare groups hope that one day puppy mills will be put out of business and dogs will be taken off the streets. Join the effort.
Dear Humane Society,
I pledge to obtain my future pet from an animal shelter and not a puppy mill. I know animals in puppy mills are often kept in deplorable conditions, and I will do my best to encourage my friends and family not to buy from puppy mills as well.
Animals need more than food and shelter. They need love, attention, and medical care. I will to provide all of the above in the hopes that I can keep my pet happy and healthy.
