Target: The Nobel Foundation
Goal: Revoke President Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Award for his participation in mass murder and infringement of civil liberties
President Barack Obama received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” Since ’09, the president has only been committed to the opposite effort: expanding global terror, denying international diplomacy, and empowering militant regimes with the use of drones. The current administration has increased the number of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan, indicted more whistle-blowers than any previous administration, deported more immigrants than any previous administration, and broadened the use of drones without regarding habeas corpus. These offenses deserve no praise or reward. Call on the Nobel Foundation to revoke Obama’s ’09 Peace Prize as a message to our leader and leaders worldwide that we do not approve of tyranny in any form.
On May 23, 2013, President Barack Obama delivered a speech about his administration’s policy, where he defended the use of drones against American and foreign citizens alike. The speech was full of presidential rhetoric, wherein our leader expressed an interest in ending the War on Terror and utilizing restraint in the drone program, but he never committed to any defined plan on how to do so. Instead, the Commander in Chief passionately endorsed the effectiveness of drones against terror, and implicitly pledged the continued and limitless usage of drones in exterminating our perceived enemies.
Obama also has failed to deliver justice to the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, which he promised to do in his first year of office. These prisoners are approaching the third month of a hunger strike. The result has been the force-feeding of inmates nearing death and the refusal to improve the harsh conditions and illegal detainment that the protest targets. A majority of these prisoners have been cleared for transfer, yet remain locked in Guantanamo.
The litany of grievances is far too massive for this single petition post, but the above demonstrations of non-peaceful actions committed by our president are more than enough to qualify the revoking of his Nobel Prize. Acclaimed linguist Noam Chomsky once commented that, “Everyone’s worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there’s really an easy way: Stop participating in it.” I would like to add to Dr. Chomsky’s solution that we must stop rewarding it as well, and the first step would be to rescind Obama’s peace prize for his participation in global terrorism.
Dear members of the Nobel Foundation,
With the upcoming announcements of Nobel Awards so close upon us, I feel another action on the part of your foundation would be pertinent and just: rescinding President Barack Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
Prior to his award, and more so since, President Obama has contributed enormously to global terror and the oppression of civil liberties. Guantanamo Bay is still active, U.S. drone strikes have been increased, soldiers in Afghanistan have grown in number, whistle-blowers are being persecuted at an all-time high in U.S. history, Syrian forces have been aided with U.S. weapons, and Palestinian rights are still being ignored.
These are not the policies of a peaceful president, but another criminal in office. On October 11, 2013, the announcement of this year’s winner of the peace prize should come with the denouncement of tyranny, and no better way can be found than the symbolic gesture of revoking Obama’s peace prize.
