Target: Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper
Goal: Change Canada’s plans for oil drilling and industrialization in the arctic region
The Canadian government has decided to take advantage of the destructive temperature changes in the polar region. As the ice melts, shipping routes open up, making oil and mineral exploitation easier. Canada has decided to push oil drilling to the arctic region, further jeopardizing the arctic environment.
There are many serious repercussions to arctic drilling. The arctic region has already seen the terrible effects of an oil spill in Alaska in 1989, which killed thousands of orcas, sea otters, and other animals. Arctic weather is incredibly treacherous, making the risk of an oil spill high. Adding oil drilling in the arctic will also destroy the habitat of the already threatened polar bears.
Drilling would also disrupt The Inuit culture ,as native food sources and quality of life could be greatly harmed. Even if no oil spills happen, environmental pollution will still occur. While oil companies may benefit from the drilling, no benefit will come to those they are intruding on.
Damage has already occurred in the arctic and drilling will only bring greater harm. With other countries such as the United States planning for arctic drilling, the risk is too great. We must ensure that Canada does not move forward with these plans and protect the area’s environment and culture.
Dear Prime Minister Harper,
The Canadian government has recently decided to push oil drilling and industrial development into the arctic region. The area is already in peril, to start drilling will only make matters worse.
Oil spills are one of the greatest risks of drilling in the arctic region, and since the weather conditions are extreme, the likelihood becomes greater. The polar bear habitat is already greatly threatened, and if an oil spill occurs, their habitat could become completely destroyed. Even if an oil spill does not occur, pollution will still be an issue. This pollution will harm not only animal habitat, but also the tribes of the Inuit people in the region. Food sources could become scarce and living conditions disrupted. The native people live quietly in this beautiful region, and that peace will most certainly be disrupted by drilling.
With the temperature increasing twice as fast in the arctic region, damage is already being brought upon it’s environment. We should protect the fragile arctic region, not contribute to it’s demise. Please prevent further damage by changing plans to industrialize and drill in the the arctic region.
