Target: Illinois Governor Pat Quinn
Goal: Support Governor Patt Quinn’s push for marriage equality.
While the United States Supreme Court weighs potential rulings for the Proposition 8 and Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) marriage equality cases, several states recently extended marriage equality to their gay and lesbian citizens. With the recent addition of Rhode Island, there are now eleven states plus Washington, DC with full marriage equality. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn (D) is boldly leading the charge to add his state to that list, telling Illinois State legislators it is “time to vote.”
Recent public opinion data indicate that more and more Americans favor marriage equality for gays and lesbians, with several national polls showing majority support. A March 2013 Pew Research Center poll, for example, found that the generational trends are even more pronounced, with as many as seven in ten members of the Millennial Generation (born 1980-1995) favoring same sex marriage. Also this March, an article by New York Times ‘FiveThirtyEight’ blogger Nate Silver noted that increasing support for marriage equality is attributable not only to the ascendence of the Millennials, but also because of increasing support within older generations. Silver’s concluding analysis additionally offers projections of marriage equality support for all states over the next decade, definitively noting that “support for same-sex marriage would continue to increase… enough that it [could] narrowly win a national ballot referendum by 2016.”
With neighboring Minnesota State legislators hashing out the details of their own marriage equality bill, Illinois is ideally poised to become another leader for the movement, particularly given Governor Quinn’s active endorsement and pursuit of equality. Thank Governor Quinn, and lend your voice to support his efforts to secure marriage rights for all.
Dear Governor Quinn,
With nationwide public support for marriage equality reaching toward a solid majority, and recent victories for same-sex marriage advocates in Rhode Island and Delaware, solid leadership advocating for continued progress is more important than ever.
Over the last year, repeated national opinion polls indicate a transition to majority support for same-sex marriage in the United States. Recent polls indicate roughly 50% of Illinois residents support extension of marriage equality, with less than one-third in opposition. Projections indicate solid, national support over the next few years, leaving Illinois perfectly positioned to lead by example and extend marriage – and numerous legal, inheritance, and financial benefits – now.
Governor Quinn, your hard work and passionate advocacy for marriage equality in Illinois must continue, both to secure fair and equal treatment under Illinois law as well as to signal to other states the importance of taking initiative on a critical modern issue. Thank you for your outstanding support, Governor, and please continue to fight for equality with knowledge that I and many other Americans are counting on you to lead by example.
