Stop Corporation from Patenting an Ancient Natural Cure

Target: Paul Bulcke, Nestlé CEO

Goal:  Don’t patent the fennel flower, a natural remedy for many health conditions

Nestlé Corporation, one of the largest food corporations in the world, claims to own the fennel flower (nigella sativa).  Fennel has been used as a natural remedy for a variety of health conditions for over a thousand years.  Nestlé is filing patent claims around the world to take ownership of this natural elixir and turn it into a costly private drug. We must put  pressure on Nestlé to drop these ridiculous patent plans before they affect the millions of people who have used this medicine for hundreds of generations.

Last year, Nestlé scientists claimed to “discover” that nigella sativa extract could be used for “nutritional interventions in humans with food allergy.” Instead of creating an artificial substitute in order to ensure accessibility, Nestlé is pursuing a full patent of fennel flower. This means that Nestlé would gain the power to sue anyone using the fennel flower without Nestlé’s permission. Nestlé has done this before – it tried to claim credit for using cow’s milk as a laxative, despite the fact that such knowledge had been in Indian medical texts for a thousand years.

Nestlé cannot be permitted to patent a traditional cure. The patent would negatively impact millions of impoverished communities in the Middle East and Asia who rely on this medicine. After all  this is the corporation that poisoned its milk with melamine, purchases cocoa from plantations that use child slave labor, and launched a breast milk substitute campaign in the 1970s that contributed to the suffering and deaths of thousands of babies from poor communities. Nestlé must respond to public outcry from its consumers and so the public must put pressure on Nestlé to drop these patent plans.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Paul Bulcke,

Last year, Nestlé scientists claimed to “discover” the health properties of the fennel flower, which has been used as a natural remedy in the Middle East and Asia for over a thousand years.  Your company is now in the process of filing patent claims around the world to take control over this natural elixir and turn it into a costly private drug. Your company has attempted patents on traditional knowledge in the past, for example when you tried to claim credit for using cow’s milk as a laxative, despite the fact that such knowledge had been in Indian medical texts for a thousand years. Nestlé cannot be permitted to patent a traditional cure and the public demands that your company drop these ridiculous patent plans.

Nestlé does not have the wellbeing of consumers in mind with this patent. After all, yours is the corporation that poisoned its milk with melamine, purchases cocoa from plantations that use child slave labor, and launched a breast milk substitute campaign in the 1970s that contributed to the suffering and deaths of thousands of babies from poor communities. This patent would negatively impact millions of impoverished communities in the Middle East and Asia who traditionally rely on this medicine and must be stopped.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
