Stop Transnational Mining Companies from Extorting El Salvador

Target:  Thomas Shrake, Pacific Rim Mining Corporation CEO

Goal: Get the Pacific Rim Mining Company to withdraw the case against the Salvadoran government and take responsibility for environmental contamination in El Salvador

More than a hundred years of mining in El Salvador has resulted in extreme environmental contamination and a public health crisis in the surrounding communities. The El Salvadoran government revoked the mining permit of Pacific Rim, a large mining company, in response to public concern. Pacific Rim is now suing the El Salvadorian government under Salvadoran Investment Laws after its case was dismissed under the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).  Pacific Rim is violating the right of El Salvador to protect its people against harm from foreign companies and must be stopped.

The environmental contamination in El Salvador from mining companies like Pacific Rim merits the government’s intervention. In 2012, the San Sebastian River was found to have nine times the acceptable limit of cyanide and one thousand times the standard for water for human consumption of iron, attributed to leeching from mining waste.  Pacific Rim has announced it is now suing El Salvador $315 million for failing to grant a license to exploit gold.

Pacific Rim is undermining the El Salvadoran government’s right to protect its citizens and act according to public interest. The company must be stopped. Demand that Pacific Rim take responsibility for the environmental contamination of El Salvador and drop its case against the Salvadoran government.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Thomas Shrake,

Pacific Rim recently announced it is suing El Salvador for $315 million for failing to grant a license to exploit gold. Pacific Rim is suing under Salvadoran Investment Laws after the case was dismissed under the U.S., Central America Free Trade Agreement. The environmental contamination in El Salvador from mining practices justifies the government’s decision to revoke the mining permit of Pacific Rim.

The government of El Salvador has the right to act in the best interests of its citizens. This petition demands that Pacific Rim Mining Company immediately withdraw the case against the Salvadoran government and take responsibility for the environmental contamination of El Salvador.

Sincerely,

ok! this time we have a chance to tell a mining company to take responsibility for its destruction of the environment… I hope we help to gain a good outcome for mother earth! What a change that would be!

  3. What kind of destruction of environment are you talking about it?, have you ever seen that place?, the company is which more work, in favor of environment, has done in its place… please, El Salvador needs investments, people needs jobs, foods, opportunities, education, health, clothes, a house, etc., to improve their lives. You are working to stop an opportunity without knowledge. There are good mining experiences in the world too.
