Target: King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy
Goal: Encourage the Saudi Arabian government to follow through on its promise to become the world’s clean energy leader.
Without Saudi Arabia’s cooperation, the rest of the world will struggle to make a difference with clean energy and climate control. For decades, Saudi Arabia has blocked the world’s progress on climate change. However, the nation finally took a step in the right direction. Saudi leaders have vowed to make a 100% switch from fossil fuels to clean energy. We must encourage Saudi Arabia to keep its promise and stay accountable to the world.
A leading member of the Saudi royal family, Prince Turki Al-Faisal, recently announced his intention to increase Saudi Arabia’s clean renewable energy percentage to 100%, from the less than 1% today. The King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy also published an “energy road map,” which sets a goal of 24-gigawatts of renewable power to be installed by 2020 and 54-gigawatts by 2032. If the nation follows through with these plans, they will be the world’s leader in clean energy.
The recent publication also announced Saudi Arabia’s plans to start construction for large-scale solar thermal energy projects. A drop in solar power prices has recently made solar costs competitive with traditional fossil fuel power generation. Prince Al-Faisal further explained, “Oil is more precious for us underground than as a fuel source. If we can get to the point where we can replace fossil fuels and use oil to produce other products that are useful, that would be very good for the world. I wish that may be in my lifetime.”

Dear King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy,
I commend your dedication to make Saudi Arabia the world’s leader in clean energy. By shifting your nation’s focus from fossil fuels to solar thermal alternatives, you are helping control climate change issues around the globe.
I am urging you to utilize the vast economic resources at your disposal to implement energy and electricity technologies that focus on solar, wind, and geothermal sources. Your nation holds the power to move past an oil-dependent history and serve as an environmentally-conscious example for the rest of the world.
