Transfer Drone Program to the Military

Target: President Obama and Administration

Goal: Absorb the drone program into the military to allow for greater transparency

Recent testimonies imply that the Obama administration may allow the absorption of the drone program into the military. If this occurs, the CIA would no longer have control over any kind of drone-based operations.

President Obama, deemed the “drone war president” by some, has taken this war technology and used it in hundreds of international operations over his presidency. We are all generally aware of the benefits of drone strikes, as well as the many costs. From the killing of innocents and paramedics with the infamous “double-tap” paradigm to possibilities of the domestic utilization of this technology, many say that the costs are simply too great. With the introduction of drone technology, it seems an Orwellian dystopia may not be too far off in the future.

One of the main criticisms of the drone program is that it is led by the CIA. In accordance with law, the CIA can keep its tasks enshrouded under that old adage, “for the sake of national security.” If the program can be seized from the possession of the CIA and implemented into the military, then it will have to operate within new boundaries of regulation. This would allow for more transparency, and hopefully, no more reckless usage of this convenient technology of war.

As described by Human Rights Watch, “The military has more transparent procedures for investigating possible wrongdoing and a longstanding tradition of legal oversight…” While this should not be the endgame for a program whose limits have yet to be clearly defined and whose potentials for catastrophe are unbounded, it is a step in the right direction. Any thought devoted towards this drone program needs to take into account the civilian casualty rate and the irreparable trauma that is caused by this program. One of the main problems many see with this program is that it removes us from war. It makes going to war “easy” for Americans. We have no stake in the end result. Hopefully Obama and his supporters in government will follow through with this one, but even so, there is still much more to tend to.

Sign below to urge the Obama administration to work towards transferring the drone program into the military.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama and fellow administrators,

Surely you are aware of the civilian fears regarding the drone program. It opens the floodgates for human rights violations and civilian casualties. Although we know that you will not eradicate this program fully, we hope that you will transfer the drone program into the military. There, at least the program will be subjected to a greater degree of regulatory practices and allow for more transparency. Hopefully this will aid in a decrease in the usage of this technology.

Allowing for a greater degree of scrutiny would be a wise move. If you don’t feel that the lives of the innocents that will be killed by these drones are reason enough to make changes, then do it for the sake of the constituents that currently doubt the motives of a president that allows the utilization of such a potentially catastrophic technology.

Sincerely,
