Target: Chris Arnold, Communications Director of Chipotle
Goal: Thank Chipotle for supporting LGBT equality and protesting the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members.
Chipotle, the Mexican fast-food chain, was recently asked to sponsor a Boy Scouts of America (BSA) event in Utah. Chipotle planned to provide the Utah BSA with $4,200 worth of coupons, and the restaurant chain has sponsored the event in the past. However, due to the BSA’s firm stance against gay membership, Chipotle has decided to withdraw its sponsorship. Thank Chipotle for refusing to sponsor an anti-gay organization that spreads intolerance and bigotry.
The BSA is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with 2.7 million youth members and over 1 million adult volunteers. The goal of BSA is to train youth in responsible citizenship and character development. However, the BSA prohibits gay children from joining the organization, as well as gay and lesbian adult volunteers from participating. For an organization that aims to promote good values and good citizenship, the BSA is in actuality promoting hate and intolerance by banning gay individuals from joining.
Due to increasing pressure from LGBT advocates and other equality organizations, the BSA considered lifting its ban on gay members and leaders this past January 2013. However, the BSA’s executive board decided to delay a vote on repealing the ban until May. Until the BSA lifts its ban on gay participants, Chipotle has vowed to not support and sponsor the BSA.
Chris Arnold, Chipotle’s spokesman and communications director, stated that terminating the sponsorship is consistent with Chipotle’s policy to not support “organizations that discriminate against a person or a group on the basis of age, political affiliation, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or religious belief.” Sign the petition below to praise Chipotle for supporting LGBT equality by canceling its sponsorship of the discriminatory BSA.
Dear Mr. Arnold,
I was pleased to hear of Chipotle’s decision to withdraw its sponsorship of the Boy Scouts of America’s event in Utah. The BSA has a firm stance against gay membership and a large restaurant chain such as Chipotle should not support its discriminatory nature. I would like to commend you for supporting LGBT rights by canceling the sponsorship.
As you may know, the goal of BSA is to train youth in responsible citizenship and character development. However, the BSA is in actuality promoting hate and intolerance by banning gay individuals from joining. The BSA also prohibits gay and lesbian adult volunteers from participating. The BSA has considered lifting its ban on gay members and leaders, but the executive board has yet to make any conclusive decisions.
The BSA’s intolerance should not be encouraged or supported, and I am glad that Chipotle is terminating its sponsorship. Thank you for taking a stand for the LGBT community and not affiliating your company with the BSA.
