Commend College for Focus on Environmental Protection

Target: Michael A. Miller, President of Northland College

Goal: Thank Northland College for its focus on quality environmental education

Northland College of Ashland, Wisconsin is one of the most environmentally conscious colleges in the world. From philosophy and education to campus buildings and refuse disposal, the school is committed to providing quality educations for a green future. Thank President Michael A. Miller for Northland’s unprecedented support for the natural world.

As a leader in environmental education, there are a lot of differences between Northland and other Colleges. At Northland, Environmental studies isn’t just a major, it is part of the school’s education requirements across the curriculum. In fact, most of the school departments are entirely dedicated to the environment. The Natural Resources Department emphasizes ecological restoration, fisheries ecology, and wildlife ecology. Along with cutting-edge sustainability practices and initiatives, additional environmental departments like Environmental Sciences, Nature and Culture, and others round out what is likely the most complete center for environmental education in existence.

A particular point of pride for Northland College is the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. Founded in 1972, the Olson Institute is a community outreach program designed to increase public understanding of nature conservation in the area. The program also includes several initiatives protecting the lakes, forests, and wildlife of Wisconsin. In the words of Olson himself, “Through this institute, people learn to understand…the basic truth that all forms of life, including humans, are interdependent and that nothing in creation stands alone.”

Northland College stands as more than an opportunity to learn the technical knowledge required to incite an environmental overhaul. The school embodies an important notion – that real change will require an exploration of ourselves, and a reconnection with the world around us. We badly need places like this, mindsets like this, to avert disaster in a diminishing natural world. Sign this petition and thank Northland College for its powerful tradition of environmental education.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Miller,

Our planet is in dire need of a change. The stresses of industrial development and natural resource dependency have pushed our environment to the brink of collapse. In order to continue the earth’s ability to bear life, an overhaul in the minds of its inhabitants must be undertaken. As one of the leading centers for environmental education the world over, Northland College stands to provide the help we and our natural habitat so badly need. I wish to remind you that your efforts have not gone unnoticed – they are a keystone in the foundation of an environmentally conscious future.

For many years, the top-quality education Northland College provides has been preparing society to wage war against environmental catastrophe. From the school philosophy to the buildings on campus, Northland is a haven for the mindset and source for the technical knowledge our young minds will need to lead the way. It is places like your establishment that are safeguarding the future of our planet. Thank you, and thanks to Northland College for its unprecedented focus on protecting the environment.

Sincerely,
