Target: Mary Jane Saunders (FAU President), Patrick Chun (FAU Athletic Director), and Rick Scott (Governor of Florida)
Goal: Stop the private prison corporation GEO Group from buying the naming rights for Florida Atlantic University’s new stadium.
The GEO Group is the largest for-profit prison corporation in the country. It’s also a company that’s infamous for unsanitary facilities, as well as unsafe and inhumane practices within its facilities—including the death of inmates in its care and sexual misconduct of children in its custody. Now this privatized incarceration business has paid 6 million dollars for the rights to name the Florida Atlantic University’s new football stadium. This is simply appalling and there is no reason it should be allowed to happen.
Not only should a prison corporation have the decency to stay out of the education system, but GEO is also infamous for giving “philanthropic” donations to communities where it believes it can grow its business interests. Florida is certainly on that list of potential business opportunities.
Allowing a prison company with a record of inhumane actions to buy advertising rights through a public university in order to improve its public image is just plain wrong. The welfare of the students and the integrity of their institution is of the up most importance in the university setting, not the money this immoral corporation wagged in front of their face.
Despite a sit-in protest on campus by Florida Atlantic students, the administrative offices have continued their business deal with the GEO Group. Please sign this petition to the FAU President and Athletic Director and stop this abomination of our nation’s higher education system.
Dear Mrs. Saunders, Mr. Chun, and Governor Scott
Please do not allow GEO Group to buy the naming rights for Florida Atlantic University’s new football stadium. This private prison company not only imprisons people for money, but also has a long and egregious record of mistreating its inmates.
Despite a six million dollar contribution to FAU, collegiate sporting events are no place for a privatized incarceration company to try and improve its public image. You must put an end to this abomination of the educational system immediately.
In addition to a poor track record, including the death of inmates and sexual misconduct of juvenile inmates, GEO Group is known to give “philanthropic” donations to communities it is interested in expanding its business to. Florida is certainly no exception to this tendency.
Allowing a privatized prison company to advertise in the collegiate setting is simply in bad taste and must be stopped at once there is no place in college athletics nor an academic institution for this type of advertising. The FAU student body does not support this deal and the community overall does not agree with this decision. Please do all that you can to ensure this business deal is reversed.
