Prevent Insurance Companies from Discriminating Against Dog Owners in Maryland

Target: Maryland State Legislators

Goal: Stop insurance companies from discriminating against dog owners

There are many homeowner’s insurance companies in Maryland who refuse to issue or renew a policy to homeowners who own a certain breed of dog. This type of regulation is discriminatory and heartless, as many homeowners faced with this decision must often choose adequate insurance over their beloved pet. A bill has been proposed to prohibit insurance companies from refusing to issue or renew a policy solely based on the applicant’s dog.

The most common dog breeds that are blacklisted with insurance companies are the Pit Bull, Doberman, Akita, German shepherd, and Rottweiler. These dog breeds are thought to be more aggressive and dangerous, therefore, insurance companies do not want to take the risk to insure homeowners with these pets. While it may be legitimate for an insurance company to cancel the insurance of a homeowner with a dangerous dog, it is discriminatory for the insurance company to refuse service just because of the dog’s breed.

Insurance companies should insure homeowners on a case-by-case basis. Oftentimes, aggressive and dangerous dogs are the product of improper care and negligence. Therefore, it is unfair to generalize all dogs within the targeted breeds as dangerous dogs.

The proposed bill would amend this discrimination by preventing insurance companies from refusing to issue or renew a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance solely because the applicant owns a dog. The proposed bill would also prohibit a policy that provides liability coverage from excluding specified coverage arising out of contact with a dog. Responsible and caring dog owners should not have to choose between their family pet and a good insurance plan.

Sign this petition to encourage Maryland legislators to pass this bill in order to prevent breed discrimination, an action that creates unnecessary hardship on responsible dog owners.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Maryland State Assembly,

A recent bill has been proposed to prevent insurance companies from refusing to issue or renew a policy solely based on the applicant’s dog. I would like to urge you to support this bill, in efforts to eliminate breed discrimination and needless hardship on responsible dog owners.

There are certain dog breeds that are considered to be more aggressive and dangerous. These breeds include the Pit Bull, Doberman, Akita, German shepherd, and Rottweiler. Many homeowner’s insurance companies will refuse to issue a policy to homeowners who own these dog breeds because of the dangerous nature of these dogs. However, it is important to keep in mind that oftentimes, aggressive dogs are the product of improper care and negligence.

While it may be legitimate for an insurance company to cancel the insurance of a homeowner with a documented dangerous dog, it is discriminatory for the insurance company to refuse service just because of the dog’s breed. Insurance companies should insure homeowners on a case-by-case basis. The proposed bill would rectify this injustice by prohibiting insurance companies from refusing to issue or renew a homeowner’s insurance solely because the applicant owns a dog. The bill would also prohibit a policy that provides liability coverage from excluding specified coverage arising out of contact with a dog.

It is unjust to punish homeowners who have obedient and loving dogs, just because their dog is a certain breed. Responsible and caring dog owners should not have to choose between their family pet and a good insurance plan. Please support this bill.

Sincerely,

Great petition! I have a pit bull and a German Shepherd and find it very difficult to find housing for this exact reason. The worst part is, both of my dogs are overgrown lap dogs who just want to cuddle, give kisses, and receive attention!

  3. This needs to be a national law. Like J Davidson said above, the dog reflects the owner. And like Sarah said above, I have a Rottie who is a lap dog and its very hard to find a place to live. Its ridiculous. Its like saying “Oh, well, your Sicilian, so your a mobster: Or “Your Irish, so your a drunk”.. Thats blatant discrimination, that is UNFOUNDED. Time to get with the program and see things for what they REALLY are. There are NO VISCOUS BREEDS. There are aggressive dogs made by bad owners and if you want facts its the little dogs that are most aggressive. FACT.
