Support New Legislative Solutions for Combating Climate Change

Target: Senators Bernie Sanders and Barbara Boxer, and members of Congress

Goal: To demonstrate support for a newly proposed plan to reduce oil companies’ carbon emissions, a major cause of climate change.

A new piece of legislation on reducing harmful carbon emissions will soon be introduced in Congress. The bill targets the country’s largest polluters, such as Exxon and Shell, by forcing them to pay a fee for their carbon and methane emissions, and the revenues of the tax will go to American families as a way to offset the possibility of higher prices on the companies’ products. It also proposes a tariff on oil and gas imports from countries that do not have a carbon emissions fee in place. Not only would the bill help curb the chief causes of climate change, but the revenues would also incentivize the private sector to invest in renewable energy and help create more American jobs by training people to work in the green energy industry. The bill, proposed by Senators Bernie Sanders and Barbara Boxer, will help cut back on the major harmful pollutants from billion dollar companies while protecting the health and pocketbook of millions of Americans.

By taxing the major corporations on their carbon and methane emissions, chances are that they would be more likely to opt for environmentally healthier fuel options. Other laws that have attempted to regulate emissions have mostly ignored their immediate impact on Americans’ financial situations. Instead of allowing companies to force the fees onto consumers through raising prices as has happened in the past, this bill seeks to counteract that ability by giving the tax revenue to citizens through a monthly rebate.

There is no shortage of warnings about the looming catastrophes related to manmade climate change, yet people continue to ignore them. The director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, James Hansen, has explained that if the status quo does not change soon, 20 to 50 percent of Earth’s species could be in danger of extinction. If we want to protect the future of our planet, Hansen explains, “We’re gonna have to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and that is not as difficult as you think. If we would just make fossil fuels pay for their true cost to society, we could begin to move to different energies and energy efficiency.” This bill would take strides in addressing these very issues. Sign the petition below to tell Senators Sanders and Boxer and members of Congress that we need this bill to pass for the health of our planet, ourselves, and future generations.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senators Bernie Sanders, Barbara Boxer, and members of Congress,

The health of our planet, our lives, and future generations are in jeopardy due to manmade climate change. As citizens of America and members of the human race, we can no longer afford to ignore the warnings of scientists by neglecting how our way of life negatively impacts the Earth. If we would just make fossil fuels pay for their true cost to society, we could begin to move to different energies and energy efficiency.”

The recent bill proposed by Senators Sanders and Boxer addresses these very issues, and it does so in a way that takes into consideration the immediate concerns of everyday Americans. The multibillion-dollar companies will be forced to take responsibility for their enormous part in climate change. The bill also has great potential to grow our economy through job-training in the green energy industry, private sector investment in renewable energy sources, and reducing the deficit over time.

If passed, this bill would be a huge stride towards a healthier future for Americans, our planet, and people around the world. We need to take this step by passing this bill.

Sincerely,
