Target: Aida Greenbury, Asia Pulp & Paper Sustainability Chief
Goal: Praise Asia Pulp & Paper for its pledge to stop deforestation in Indonesia.
Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) is the third-largest paper company in the world. In past years, APP has come under pressure by environmental groups to halt operations in pristine forests and peatland ecosystems. In an effort to preserve Indonesian habitats of threatened and endangered animals, APP has pledged to stop cutting Indonesia’s natural rain forests. Applaud APP for its commitment to end deforestation and for taking a step toward environmental protection.
In the last decade, Indonesia has lost more than one-third of its forest cover due to logging efforts. These activities are responsible for the majority of Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions, making this country the world’s fourth-largest carbon emitter. Excess amounts of carbon emissions negatively affect the Earth’s atmosphere and are a major contributing factor to current climate change issues. In addition to global climate change, clear-cutting activities also have a devastating impact on biodiversity. By logging in Indonesia’s pristine rainforests, paper mill companies are wiping away the homes of many rare species. The endangered orangutan and Sumatran tiger are two species threatened by extinction, specifically due to the loss of natural forest habitat. Loss of habitat prevents species from successfully breeding, hunting, and surviving.
In addition to ending deforestation in natural forested areas, APP has also agreed to improve its peatland management to reduce carbon emissions, as well as work with local indigenous communities to protect their native land. By pledging to protect natural rainforests, APP is taking great strides toward habitat preservation through sustainable business practices.
Please sign this petition to applaud APP for its dedication to ending deforestation and encourage this company to continue setting a good example for the paper mill industry.
Dear Ms. Greenbury,
It pleases me to hear of Asia Pulp & Paper’s recent pledge to combat deforestation activities in Indonesia. In the last decade, Indonesia has suffered great environmental losses due to human activities such as logging and clear-cutting. These activities increase carbon emissions worldwide and lead to global climate change issues. Deforestation also greatly affects many of Indonesia’s rare species, including the orangutan and Sumatran tiger. By wiping away hundreds of acres of pristine forests, paper mill companies are destroying habitats that are used as breeding and hunting grounds for animals.
I am glad to hear that APP is also planning to improve its peatland management to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as work closely with local communities to strive toward land protection. Your promise to protect forests is refreshing in this era of environmental change. I would like to thank you for taking steps to ensure the preservation of fragile ecosystems and encourage you to continue working toward a sustainable future.
