End the Exploitation of Migrant Farmers in Italy

Target: The Italian Government

Goal: End the cruel mistreatment of migrant workers in Italy’s agricultural regions.

Italy is severely exploiting migrant workers for cheap labor in annual orange and tomato harvests. The workers come from throughout Africa and Asia to work temporary jobs, earning less than $5 an hour, often working more than 14 hours a day. The living conditions for the workers are less than adequate, with sometimes more than 30 workers confined to a one floor house. Demand that the cruel mistreatment of migrant farmers is examined, the unlivable wages raised and living conditions improved.

Many of the tomatoes harvested by migrant workers are being exported overseas for sale in cans, pizzas and other processed foods. Additionally, it was recently revealed that Coca Cola bought oranges from the crops harvested by the migrant workers in Italy. The soft drink giant should be held responsible for supporting the terrible conditions the migrant workers endure. Workers have reported that they take any job they can get, for any pay, due to the fact that many migrants are working in Italy without appropriate paperwork. The approximate number of illegal immigrants in Italy is 500,000. Many seek seasonal harvesting jobs and accept any wages offered, knowing that if they do not accept, there are thousands of other workers who will take the job.

The Italian government needs to re-look the unjust working and living conditions migrant workers face. We must provide fair wages to all who work in agriculture, a difficult job that is significant for millions of people’s survival. Sign this petition and end the exploitation of migrant workers in Italy.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Italian Government,

I would like to express my concern for the thousands of migrant workers being mistreated in Italy. Thousands of immigrants come from throughout Africa and Asia to work in the annual orange and tomato harvests. These workers are receiving less than $5 an hour, for sometimes more than 14 hours of work a day. There are approximately 500,000 illegal immigrants working in Italy, enduring unlivable wages and unhealthy conditions. It is time to act now and end the exploitation of migrant workers. We must provide fair wages to all who work in agriculture, a difficult job that is significant for millions of people’s survival.

Please end the exploitation and cruel mistreatment of migrant workers in Italy.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
