Target: Wayne B. Goldberg, CEO of La Quinta Inn
Goal: Urge La Quinta to elimiate down bedding from all of its 800+ hotels.
Down bedding may seem luxurious, but for the birds who provide the materials for down pillows and comforters, the process is anything but. Urge La Quinta to help put an end to the needless suffering of countless ducks and geese by elimnating down from all of its locations, both corporate-owned and franchised.
Feathers for down bedding can be acquired either from birds killed for foie gras or from live birds. Live birds have their feathers ripped out without the use of any anesthetic. Oftentimes, their skin is ripped along with the feathers, and the birds are sewn back up with a needle and thread–again without the benefit of painkillers.
Down acquired from non-living birds is no better: ducks and geese raised for foie gras are fed through tubes and are forced to eat in order to make their livers swell, which is extremely painful.
La Quinta has already made great strides in terms of eliminating down bedding; its corporate-held locations, which account for about half of the chain’s hotels, have already banned the use of down bedding. However, the remaining half of the chain’s locations are franchised, and the current company policy leaves the choice of bedding up to the franchise owner.
Call on La Quinta to instate a cohesive and cruelty-free company policy. Sign the petition and tell La Quinta to eliminate down bedding altogether.
Dear Mr. Goldberg,
Nothing is more important in the hotel business than making sure customers have a good night’s rest. While down bedding may seem like a great answer to this, down is in reality an exploitative and cruel industry. I urge you to follow through on the policy observed by La Quinta’s corporate-owned hotels and prohibit down bedding from all of La Quinta franchise locations as well.
Ducks and geese raised for down are subject to abuse and ill-treatment until their deaths. Some birds are plucked alive without anesthetics, while others are plucked after they have been killed for foie gras. The latter spend their lives being force-fed through tubes, living in increasing pain and discomfort as their livers swell.
La Quinta has already made great strides in putting an end to this cruel and unnecessary practice. The absence of down bedding from all corporate-owned locations is truly a triumph. However, in order for La Quinta to be able to proudly proclaim itself a cruelty-free hotel chain, the policy must be extended to apply to franchised locations as well.
I urge you to do the right thing and eliminate down from all La Quinta locations, both corporate-owned and franchised.
