Target: The Humane Society of the United States
Goal: To say thank you for encouraging pet stores to stop supporting puppy mills
Despite the cruel and inhumane nature of puppy mills, they continue to exist and remain in operation. Dogs who are a part of puppy mill operations live horrible lives. These dogs are kept in extremely cramped cages for a majority of their lives. They are often mistreated, neglected, and abused. It is a sad reality, but the dogs found in puppy mills are completely disregarded as living animals. Their only purpose is to produce offspring for the sake of making money for the cruel individuals who subject them to a lifetime’s worth of torture and agony. Action must be taken to end the existence of puppy mills.
Fortunately, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and pet stores throughout the country have taken the initial steps in eradicating puppy mills. Through one of its campaigns, HSUS encourages pet stores to take the pledge to become “puppy friendly.” In order for a pet store to be considered “puppy friendly,” it must stop selling puppies. This discourages individuals from buying puppies and encourages them to adopt a homeless dog instead. By encouraging their customers to support local pet shelters and adoption-only programs, pet stores are not only helping homeless animals in need, but they are also discouraging puppy mill owners from breeding more puppies due to a lack of demand.
While it may seem quite strange for a pet store not to sell puppies, this program has been proven to work. Areas that have participating pet stores have seen a considerable rise in adoption rates and an equally considerable decline in euthanasia rates. These results have been achieved by stores simply refusing to sell puppies. So far, about 2,000 pet stores have taken the pledge to be “puppy friendly.” Sign the petition below to commend these pet stores for taking the pledge to stop supporting puppy mills and to encourage other pet stores to do the same.
Dear Humane Society of the United States,
I would like to say thank you for your efforts in your campaign to make pet stores “puppy friendly.” By encouraging pet stores to support adoption-only programs, you are not only helping homeless animals in need, but also helping end the cruel practice of breeding dogs in puppy mills.
Your campaign is very well organized and easily identifies stores who have taken the pledge to be “puppy friendly” ; it is extremely convenient that your website lists all the pet stores who have taken the pledge. This not only commends pet stores for taking action against puppy mills, but also helps individuals to find pet stores who participate in the program. Individuals can visit one of these pet stores in order to receive more information about adoption and also to support the pet store by buying pet supplies.
While not all pet stores have taken the pledge, about 2,000 pet stores have already done so. By continuing to work together, the HSUS, animal lovers, and pet store owners can make puppy mills a thing of the past.
