Ban Ivory Trade in Thailand

Target: Yingluck Shinawatra, Thai Prime Minister

Goal: Ban all ivory trade in Thailand.

It is illegal to sell ivory from African elephants in Thailand, but it is completely legal to sell ivory from domestic Thai elephants. Consequently, due to the high demand for ivory, vast quantities of African ivory are being shipped and sold throughout Thailand. Ask the Thai Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, to close this loophole and protect both African and Thai elephants.

Ivory is often used to make jewelry, Buddhist carvings, and various other trinkets that are then sold to tourists throughout Thailand. Many consumers have false conceptions about the removal of elephant tusks, believing the animals are left unharmed. In reality, many elephants are killed for their ivory. The biggest poaching problem is currently happening in Africa; thousands of elephants are killed each year, and the animals are quickly becoming endangered. The high demand for ivory in Thailand has led to the illegal trade and sale of African ivory in Thai shops. Thailand has the largest unregulated ivory market throughout the globe, and is driving the poaching and illegal trade of African ivory.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the seriousness of elephant poaching. The WWF is urging Thailand to ban all ivory trade and prevent elephant poaching in Africa and Thailand. Sign this petition and insist that the Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra ban the sale of all ivory in Thailand and protect these majestic creatures.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Yingluck Sinawatra,

Thousands of elephants are slaughtered each year for their ivory. Because it is legal to sell ivory from domestic Thai elephants in Thailand, large amounts of African ivory is being shipped and sold in Thai shops.

By closing this legal loophole, and banning the trade of all ivory, Thailand can save the thousands of elephants that are being killed in Africa. The high demand for ivory in Thailand is perpetuating the severe poaching problem occurring in Africa. African elephants are very close to becoming endangered, and if the demand for ivory keeps rising, Thai elephants are at risk as well. Please ban the sale of all ivory in Thailand, and protect African and Thai elephants.

Sincerely,

  1. James Polk says:

It is utterly unacceptable that the entire global community is passively watching the slaughter of our most precious species of wildlife! It is equally unacceptable that governments have not managed to stop the horrendous crimes committed by poachers in their merciless slaughter of entire families of animals around the globe.
We need a coordinated military response acting on a global scale to PUT AN END TO POACHING! The global community must recognize our responsibility to protect these defenseless animals.
The international community of concerned citizens who treasure the welfare of these magnificent animals must respond with bounty money to track down the poachers, and to BOYCOTT Thailand and China as tourist destinations and as sources of goods and services. The wealthiest members of our societies should donate generously to adopt orphaned animals, but also to engage an armed response to hunt down the poachers and to remove them from society permanently.
