Applaud Environmental Initiative for Encouraging Solar Installations

Target: Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: Commend the Vote Solar Initiative for expanding solar and saving millions of dollars in California.

A study recently released by the California-based Vote Solar Initiative found that the net-metered rooftop solar program the organization encourages will provide over $92 million in annual benefits to ratepayers of California’s three investor-owned utilities. Vote Solar has pushed ahead with its work despite the resistance of these utilities. Applaud the initiative for its efforts to bring better sustainable energy practices to the state.

Net metering is a program in which rooftop-solar customers are provided with utility bill credits in payment for the surplus energy their individual solar arrays feed onto the grid. This program has been highly influential in solar’s rapid expansion across California, with two-thirds of home installations occurring in low and median income neighborhoods. Vote Solar‘s recent study was commissioned in response to increasing criticism from the state’s three investor-owned utilities–Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric. Net metering reduces the utilities’ ability to justify their capital investment infrastructure, which earns them a guaranteed profit.

The study, authored by consultant and former California Public Utilities Commission advisor Tom Beach of Crossborder Energy, uses CPUC approved economic models and data from solar customers to assess the overall impacts of net metering in the three utilities’ territories. The study finds that financial benefits strongly outweigh the costs, providing a net benefit value of more than $92 million by the time the program is fully prescribed. Advantages include savings on conventional dirty power sources, reduced costs in transmission infrastructure, reduced amounts of electricity lost in transmission lines, and savings on meeting the state’s renewable energy quotas.

Adam Browning, Executive Director of the Vote Solar Initiative, said, “When someone decides to put solar panels on their roof, they not only generate clean power, but also reduce strain on the electric grid while offering financial benefits to all ratepayers. We’ve got a long way to go in revamping an antiquated energy grid and growing California’s clean economy, and net metering is critical to those efforts.” In addition to the ratepayer benefits, solar provides economic, environmental and public health benefits. California’s burgeoning solar industry now employs over 43,000 citizens and has attracted more than $10 billion in private investment.

The benefits of the net-metering initiative far outweigh any costs. Sign this petition to ask the EPA to applaud the Vote Solar Initiative for its efforts to combat the profit-hungry utilities and provide a strong sustainable infrastructure for the future.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Environmental Protection Agency,

The Vote Solar Initiative based in California encourages a net-metering solar program which has been critical to the expansion of photovoltaic technology in the state. Net metering is a program in which rooftop-solar customers are provided with utility bill credits in payment for the surplus energy their individual solar arrays feed onto the grid. The initiative recently released a study showing that financial benefits of net-metering strongly outweigh the costs, providing a net benefit value of more than $92 million by the time the program is fully prescribed. Advantages include savings on conventional dirty power sources, reduced costs in transmission infrastructure, reduced amounts of electricity lost in transmission lines, and savings on meeting the state’s renewable energy quotas.

The work of the initiative is helping to spread solar over the state of California as a strong  reliable source of renewable energy. The industry now employs over 43,000 Californians and has attracted more than $10 billion in private investment in the state. I urge you to applaud the Vote Solar Initiative for its work to protect our environment in a cooperative, citizen-driven effort.

Sincerely,
