Target: President Abdullah Gul
Goal: To get the Turkish government to investigate the murder of three activists in Paris.
The government of Turkey must condemn the recent murder of three female members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Paris. The government of Turkey must also work with French authorities to arrest and hold responsible those that committed this act. The PKK seeks to gain autonomy for the Kurdish population in Turkey. One of the women killed was Sakine Cansiz, a founding member of the PKK and the first female member of the organization. The French government came out and said that the killings were without doubt an execution. As of the writing of this petition, there have been no suspects taken into custody for the crime. Turkey and other international governments must hold those who are responsible accountable for their actions.
The deaths of these women come as peace talks were beginning to gain traction. The Turkish government said in a statement that the killings could be aimed at derailing these peace talks that have attempted to end the war that has killed 40,000 people since it began in 1984. As a part of these peace talks, the Turkish government has approached the imprisoned leader of the PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, hoping to have him persuade his followers to lay down their arms.
If Turkey can solve the conflict with the Kurdish population in their country, the benefits would be significant at home and abroad. However, the political landscape in Turkey and abroad at the current time will not allow for such change. Turkey, the U.N., the United States and The European Union label the PKK as a terrorist organization. If this situation continues, political assassinations such as the one that took place in Paris will continue to occur. Sign this petition and demand that the Turkish government apprehend and convict those who murdered these three PKK activists.
Dear President Abdullah Gul,
Your government must condemn the murder of three Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) members in Paris. Those who are responsible for the killings must be brought to justice so that the atmosphere of political intolerance will change in your country. These killings threaten to bring down the fledgling peace talks that are so important to ending the conflict that has claimed the lives of 40,000 people in your country since 1984.
I ask that you begin an investigation, in cooperation with the French government, into the murders of these women so that you may solve the conflict with the Kurdish population in your country. Doing so would bring significant economic and political benefits at home and abroad.
